New Amazon Goodies

Amazon alexa echo fire tvFor fans of Amazon’s range of Fire and Echo devices – good news, a new range is now available for pre-order.

The most exciting is the new Echo Plus – with a built in smart hub allowing direct connectivity to a range of smart devices without the need for an additional hub. Directly supported are Hive, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Wemo and TP-Link (plus others). And the new echo comes in a smart silver, as well as the original black and white options.

Also available is the all new 4K HDR Fire TV, with a smaller form factor than the original Fire TV but bigger than the Fire TV Stick. Throw into the mix a new “Echo Show” – with a screen – and it’s a strong Autumn (or fall, for the American’s out there!) lineup from Amazon.

Ok, so, here’s the first batch of deals from the Amazon Black Friday Deals for Monday. We don’t know prices yet, but I’ll update this thread as the prices are announced so keep checking back. I know that there aren’t a lot of Blu Ray bargains announced so far, but I’m sure nobody will complain if the prices are as low as we hope they will be! For example, it’s already been announced that Take That’s new album (Progress) will be just £1 from 9am! Well, here goes:

Blockbuster (USA) in administration

News is reaching us that the US rental giant Blockbuster has filed for bankruptcy with debts of $1bn. This shouldn’t affect the company’s non-US operations, as they are seperate legal entities. Blockbuster have confirmed that all of its 3000 outlets in the USA will remain open during the “restructuring process”. In addition, they have managed to secure a loan of $125m to aid in this “restructuring”.

So what does this mean to the UK consumer? Well, nothing – Blockbuster will continue to trade as normal in the UK. The only possible side effect is that the US operation have agreements with the major Hollywood studios for the rights to distribute rental versions of their movies. It has been suggested, however, that while the US operation is in bankruptcy, these agreements will continue to be honoured and protected. We’ll update you if we hear any more.

CD-WOW Update

It seems we were a bit premature in announcing the demise of CD-WOW. Whilst it is true that the parent company STOMP HK and STOMP AU are in voluntary administration, it has come to light that CD-WOW has been sold to another company – Surrealus Pty Ltd. This company also own Australian DVD retailer EzyDVD, as well as running the Blockbuster franchise in Australia.

So good news then – I have regularly used EzyDVD in the past, so it can only be a good thing for CD-WOW to have these guys on board. We’ll keep you updated if we hear any more!

Many thanks to atexp80 who provided further information in the comments of the previous article.

CD-WOW in administration

A word of warning to anyone plannning to use CD-WOW today – their parent company STOMP HK and STOMP AU are now in voluntary administration. This essentially spells the end of CD-WOW unless a buyer can be found.

At the time of writing, CD-WOW are still accepting orders on their website, and there is no mention on the site of the state of their parent company. But it is unlikely that any orders placed will be fulfilled.

It is a sad end for a company that at one point was the best retailer on the web – incredible prices, great voucher offers and outstanding customer service. However, in recent years they have suffered badly – rarely did they offer competitive pricing, customer service became attrocious and waiting times for ordered items were often measured in months. No retailer can offer such poor service and still expect to survive. Goodbye CD-WOW, unfortunately you won’t be missed……..
